Traffic safety initiatives by the Roads General Authority

How has the Roads General Authority improved traffic safety?

As part of road safety improvements, the Roads General Authority has launched the “Excellent and Safe Roads” campaign. The Minister of Transportation and Logistics dedicated the last five days of January to surveying and evaluating the road network outside the urban area.

Members of different categories participated in the campaign. They include transportation and logistics system employees, university students, and road security personnel. Representatives from the Ministry of Communications and Information and the Ministry of Energy and Industry also participated in the campaign. The participants were divided into 62 teams distributed in different regions of Saudi Arabia.

Participants monitor all observations on the roads, such as:

Potholes and cracks in the roads.
Poor communication network.

As well as any observation that they believe affects the quality of services for road users and the observations that road users share with the Authority while using the road.

Some of the techniques to improve traffic safety used by the Authority

The Minister of Transportation and the head of the Roads General Authority have launched an innovative technology to ensure the efficiency of road signs by measuring reflective films.

The technology assesses the quality and effectiveness of the reflective films and consequently, the signs in terms of clarity, using specialized devices to measure the volume of reflected light. Through this technique, visibility on the road can be improved, especially in bad weather conditions and at night, by identifying the need for maintenance or replacement of the signs to ensure the clarity of the signs on the road signs.

As the reflective films and materials in the signs have specific color coordinates during the day and night, the daytime color coordinates differ from the nighttime color, and the nighttime color coordinates are clearer and higher, as stated in the Saudi Road Code 602.

Results of the campaign launched to enhance traffic safety

On the final day of the fifth consecutive year of the “Excellent and Safe Roads” campaign, the Roads General Authority announced the results of the initiative. The campaign succeeded in monitoring more than 14,000 observations on Saudi Arabia’s roads, which totaled more than 73,000 kilometers in length.
