As part of the Roads General Authority (RGA) in Saudi Arabia’s efforts to launch the Saudi Road Code, which will serve as a technical reference when implementing any project related to roads, such as infrastructure, road design, road utilities, road traffic safety systems, etc., the RGA signed seven agreements with various government parties at the Saudi Road Code launch ceremony under the Ministry of Transportation and Logistics.
This is very important for achieving road traffic safety, so it is one of the fundamentals of traffic safety.
The goal of Saudi Road Code agreements in traffic safety
Saudi Road Code includes 25 codes in terms of planning, study, and preliminary modeling of roads in addition to the design, implementation, maintenance, and engineering of roads and tunnels. And other codes that we will mention later.
The Roads General Authority’s goal of these agreements in traffic safety is to:
- Include the Saudi Road Code in the project brochure.
- Developing local participation in the road sector.
- Improving the quality of road projects in different regions of Saudi Arabia.
- Provide training workshops.
The relation of traffic_safety with the Saudi Road Code
Like any other project, road projects have a life cycle from study and planning to full implementation and running. Hence, the road project goes through different stages to ensure safety starting from thinking about the project and articulating it with a simple approximate drawing of the route until we reach the operation of the road and the vehicles traveling on it.
Stages that road projects go through
- Planning and preliminary studies: when we see Road projects begin at this stage, feasibility studies and economic evaluations related to cost and surrounding conditions are conducted.
- Design study: A preliminary and sometimes detailed design is presented until a design is reached that can be used for bidding and construction. This phase includes all parts of the road, tunnels, equipment, and utilities.
- Construction activities: Project implementation begins after bidding.
- Operation and maintenance: This phase takes place after construction is completed.
This series of stages is necessary to achieve traffic safety while checking each stage and ensuring that traffic safety is achieved through high quality.
Using traffic safety systems to ensure road safety
After the design of the road is completed and before it is ready for use, specialists are insuring the safety of the road and its high degree of safety to protect road users through the installation of traffic safety systems in the streets.
It isn’t possible to find a road that has been in service and used by vehicles without traffic safety systems such as metal or concrete barriers, whether on the sides of the road or separating the two directions.
Therefore, you install traffic safety systems on the road before starting to use them, and the most popular systems used, as mentioned above, are road barriers. There are now many types of road barriers, so you find well-known Guardrail road barriers, and in other areas, such as desert areas, you find MegaSrail road barriers and safety roller barriers.
Gantry and cantilever signs guide drivers and facilitate traffic flow, which saves time and effort. Standard road signs alert drivers to road dangers.
Improving Traffic Safety Systems to Achieving Saudi Vision 2030
Shawahid Industrial Roads Co. didn’t only design and manufacture traffic safety systems for roads, but also developed these systems, using modern technologies for some systems or changing parts of the design to become safer under international specifications, and issuing shock-absorbing traffic safety systems such as Crash Cushion and End Terminal, which you can find on our website and can be requested through:
